Flag Day ceremony set for June 14

Menomonie, Wis.—The Dunn County Veterans Memorial Committee of Main Street of Menomonie, Inc. and the Greater Menomonie Area Community Foundation invite area residents to the 10th annual dedication of the new bricks at the Dunn County Veterans Memorial on Monday,  June 14, 2010 at 10:00 AM.

The dedication will take place at the Veterans Memorial at Knapp Park located at the intersection of the Historic Second Street Corridor and Crescent Street in downtown Menomonie.  Menomonie Fire Chief Jack Baus will serve as the emcee for the ceremony and Dudley Markham of Menomonie will be the program speaker.

This annual program began on Flag Day, June 14, 2000 when over 300 bricks were dedicated and the monument unveiled.   This monument was created as Dunn County’s way of honoring men and women who had served their country in the military.  The veterans honored need not be from Dunn County, nor must they have been involved in any war.

The Committee that planned and carried out the original project included: Dwight Agnew (Army, WWII), Duane Bauer (Army, Vietnam Era/Veterans Service Officer), Orazio Fumagalli (Navy, WWII), Colleen Rogers (Army, Vietnam Era), Wesley Schulz (Army, WWII), Edward Stevens (Army, WWII), Robert Swanson (Army, WWII), and Gerald Talen (Navy, WWII). Current members of the committee include Joe Maglio, George Jimos, Sandy Ott, Leo Schindler, Lisa Frank and Debbie Labs.

The monument is a living memorial and each year it is possible to add additional bricks inscribed with names of people who have served in the armed forces.  The Dunn County Veteran’s Memorial Committee of Main Street of Menomonie, Inc. is responsible for the memorial and programs relating to it. The Greater Menomonie Area Community Foundation coordinates the brick program and manages the Dunn County Veterans Memorial Endowment Fund.

Anyone interested in arranging the placement of a memorial brick, or making a donation to the endowment fund should contact the Community Foundation (715) 232-8019, 500 Main Street, Suite 322, PO Box 53, Menomonie, WI 54751.  Additional information regarding veterans of Dunn County may be obtained at the Veterans Service Office, 800 Wilson Avenue in Menomonie.

This is a rain or shine event and those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
